Ural Plant Zenit – a reliable shield for Kazakhstan's defense industry

Ural Plant Zenit JSC is one of the key enterprises in Kazakhstan's defense industry, fulfilling state orders in the field of shipbuilding and the production of special equipment.

Established in 1941 on the basis of the Dvigatel plant evacuated from Leningrad, the plant became an example of industrial heroism during the war years. Just one month after the evacuation and launch of production in Uralsk, the enterprise sent its first batch of weapons to the front. For its significant contribution to the Victory, the plant was awarded the Order of the Patriotic War, 1st class – the only enterprise in Kazakhstan to receive this high award.

Today, Zenit continues the traditions of domestic machine building, performing the most important tasks to strengthen the country's defense capabilities. It is part of JSC NC Kazakhstan Engineering, which brings together leading enterprises in the defense industry.

The total area of the plant is about 21 hectares, with a production area of 74,000 square meters. The enterprise employs about 1,000 specialists.

As part of the state defense order, the plant manufactures boats and ships, provides technical maintenance and modernization services. In addition, the enterprise produces special equipment for defense agencies, manufactures equipment for the oil and gas and other industries, and also produces popular civilian products.

The plant has implemented international management systems: quality management in accordance with ISO 9001 requirements, as well as occupational health and safety management in accordance with ISO 45001:2018.

Every ship and boat built in the factory workshops is the product of collective labor, bringing together specialists into a single professional team. The backbone of the factory is made up of workers aged around 50, who account for approximately 60% of the entire workforce. The company also employs veterans of retirement age: many of them have solid experience and are so attached to their jobs that they cannot imagine themselves in another profession. At the same time, there is a shortage of workers in such specialties as turners, millers, and adjusters.

Mentoring plays an important role at Zenit: experienced employees pass on their knowledge and skills to young specialists, helping them to master professional competencies and improve their qualifications.

Today, the company is capable of building vessels with a displacement of up to 1,000 tons, including multifunctional, patrol, search and rescue, firefighting, floating laboratories, and pontoons. Over the years of independence, 36 boats and ships of various classes and designs have been built and commissioned for the country's security agencies. All of them are based in Aktau, Atyrau, and the village of Bautino in the Tupkaragan district of the Mangistau region, serving to ensure Kazakhstan's national security in the Caspian Sea.

Currently, the plant is building a large multifunctional vessel with a displacement of 750 tons for the Ministry of Defense. Its launch is scheduled for spring 2026. This spring, the company completed the construction of the small patrol ship Aibar, which is already patrolling the country's maritime border.

Ural Plant Zenit JSC combines historical heritage and modern technology, remaining the flagship of domestic shipbuilding. The enterprise not only fulfills defense orders, but also actively implements innovative solutions, expanding the capabilities of Kazakhstan's industry.
