The shortage of technical specialists at enterprises in the Akmola Region is gradually decreasing. The “Year of Blue-Collar Professions,” announced by the Head of State, has provided an additional impetus for the development of this sector: the number of grants for blue-collar and engineering specialties has increased, and the prestige of these professions has grown significantly. Today, students already understand during their studies where they will be able to apply their knowledge, and enterprises in the region are receiving a long-awaited influx of young specialists, according to the official website of the Department of Domestic Policy.
The Kokshetau Higher Technical College is an example of successful workforce training. It is one of the most modern educational institutions in the region, where instruction is based on the principle of “learning through practice.” The college operates 20 competency centers equipped with world-class facilities. Here, specialists are trained in the fields of mechanical engineering, construction, energy, IT, and other areas. Students undergo dual training, combining classes with work at companies such as JSC "Tynys," "KAMAZ Engineering," and the Kazakhstan Agro-Innovation Corporation.
Education through practice
Tlek Sabitova, a college instructor, notes that the institution currently offers three levels of training: vocational training, technical and vocational education, and applied bachelor’s degree programs.
"We have about 2,500 students and approximately 200 instructors and instructors. We offer programs in 26 specializations and more than 100 qualifications. Many students stay to work in our city, especially those in dual-track programs. Work-based training is a real opportunity to prove themselves, and often students are hired by companies right from their internships," says the methodologist.
The college is actively implementing digital technologies: over a thousand computers, VR equipment, 3D printers, and training simulators help students master modern skills. The educational environment is also adapted for students with special needs.
IT is coming to the forefront
The college has achieved great success at WorldSkills competitions. Regional winner Alexander Tsalco plans to pursue a career in the IT sector.
"We’re learning to work with drones, which are used today in agriculture and cartography. Even though this is a technical college, IT is in high demand right now, and we see that in practice," he shares.
Graduates confirm the growing prestige of blue-collar professions
Graduates also confirm that the prestige of blue-collar professions is indeed on the rise. Maxim Makulakov, who graduated with a degree in "Mechanical Engineering Technology," now works at one of the local enterprises.
"I have never once regretted my choice of profession. My parents once suggested that a technical field offers good prospects. Today, this is confirmed: grants and salaries are rising, and the government supports us. Blue-collar professions are becoming increasingly attractive," says Maxim.
Business and Education
The college’s industry partners emphasize the importance of this collaboration. According to Kairat Dyusenbekov, production manager at Kazakhstan Agro Innovation Corporation LLP, the influx of young specialists into companies has grown significantly in recent years, and today young people are more willing to choose blue-collar professions and come to work in manufacturing.
"Skilled trades are in demand today more than ever. We produce a large amount of equipment, and we need specialists. 80 percent of the students who complete their internships with us stay on to work. Of the company’s 360 employees, about 30 are young specialists who joined us after graduating from the college. We provide them with jobs, opportunities to grow, and to advance their qualifications."
Incidentally, the Higher Technical College has become a vital link in addressing the region’s labor shortage. It combines modern educational technologies, practice-oriented training, and close collaboration with the business sector, producing specialists who feel confident in a production environment right from the start of their careers.
