Austria to allocate billions of euros to develop key industrial technologies

The Austrian government has developed an industrial strategy for the period up to 2035, hoping to halt deindustrialization and strengthen the country's technological independence. It plans to allocate around €2.6 billion to support nine key technologies, ranging from artificial intelligence and chips to energy and aviation, according to a statement from the Office of the Federal Chancellor.

“Nine key technologies and priority areas have been identified for the first time. A budget of around €2.6 billion has been allocated for targeted investments in these technologies,” the statement said.

It is specified that the list of nine key technologies includes: artificial intelligence and data innovation; chips, electronic components, and systems; advanced manufacturing technologies and robotics; quantum technologies and photonics; advanced materials; life sciences and biotechnology; energy and environmental technologies; mobility technologies; space and aviation technologies.

It is noted that the Council of Ministers made the decision on Tuesday. “With the help of the 2035 industrial strategy, the federal government has presented an ambitious implementation program, which was developed with the close participation of social partners, industry, and numerous experts,” the authorities explained.

The strategy includes 114 measures grouped into seven areas, including support for research and innovation, energy development, infrastructure, training, and improving economic sustainability in light of European and geopolitical challenges.

According to Austrian Economy Minister Wolfgang Hattmansdorfer, industry remains the foundation of prosperity and employment in the country, and the new strategy is designed to halt the decline in the sector and launch a process of reindustrialization.

According to the document, Austria expects to be among the top ten OECD countries in terms of industrial production by 2035.
