Association of Kazakhstan Machinery Industry: Machine Building in Kazakhstan Has Grown 8.5-Fold

Arman Galimov, Deputy Director of the Executive Directorate of the Association of Kazakhstan Machinery Industry:

Today, the domestic machine-building industry is one of the key sectors of the manufacturing industry and the foundation of the country’s industrial development. In recent years, the industry has demonstrated steady growth, expanded its product range, and advanced localization and industrial cooperation.

While production volume stood at 670 billion tenge in 2015, it reached a historic high of 5.7 trillion tenge in 2025, an 8.5-fold increase. The sector’s share in the manufacturing industry is approaching 20%.

Enterprises are gradually transitioning from large-scale to small-scale assembly and deeper component manufacturing. Industry clusters are forming, major investment projects are being implemented, and human resource capacity is being strengthened.

For example, a full-fledged railway engineering cluster has been formed in the railway engineering sector.

Its structure includes companies from the Railways Systems Holding group, Stadler Kazakhstan, Alstom, and Wabtec. Freight and passenger railcars are manufactured by two domestic companies—Kazakhstan Railcar Building Company and ZIKSTO—while locomotives are produced by Locomotive Manufacturing Plant (in partnership with the American company Wabtec) and “Electric Locomotive Manufacturing Plant” (with the French company Alstom). Prommashkomplekt LLP, which is part of the RWS holding, manufactures railway wheels and track superstructure components. The Aktobe Rail and Beam Plant manufactures rails.

Railway engineering has enormous potential for development. The products comply with international quality standards and are supplied not only to the domestic market but also for export to Azerbaijan, Vietnam, and Central Asian countries. The range of manufactured products expands every year.

Alongside key areas, the systematic development of manufacturing capabilities in other engineering sectors continues.

In the automotive industry, a transition toward deeper localization is underway. The production of automotive components, such as seats, plastic parts, and multimedia systems, is being developed. Flagship projects are being implemented, such as the “Astana Motors Manufacturing Kazakhstan” plant (Almaty) with a capacity of 120,000 vehicles per year, and the KIA Kazakhstan plant (Kostanay) with a complete cycle of assembly (CKD) that produces 70,000 KIA vehicles per year.

AgroMashHolding KZ and Kazrost operate in the agricultural machinery sector. Leading agricultural machinery manufacturers — CLAAS and John Deere — are represented here. There are a number of agricultural machinery manufacturers, including producers of towed and mounted equipment. There are about 20 companies in this segment with a high level of localization; these companies are actively modernizing their production and expanding their product lines.
